Facebook is allowing videos showing people being decapitated to be posted and shared on its site once again.

It is hard for me to understand why intelligent people like David Byrne and Thom Yorke do not appear to understand that we are in the midst of new markets being formed. I would also add that many journalists and media commentators don’t understand this phenomenon either. It is not about technology; it’s about systems and societal shifts. It’s also about music business bubbles.

In Montevideo, Uruguay this week, the Directors of all the major Internet organizations – ICANN, the Internet Engineering Task Force, the Internet Architecture Board, the World Wide Web Consortium, the Internet Society, all five of the regional Internet address registries – turned their back on the US government. With striking unanimity, the organizations that actually develop and administer Internet standards and resources initiated a break with 3 decades of U.S. dominance of Internet governance.

Voilà pourquoi les chercheurs parlent d’une “écologie des machines”. Parce que ces pratiques de trading informatique ne sont pas séparées de notre monde, parce que nous avons créé un système écologique qui lie les machines entre elles et nous lie aux machines. Parce chaque participant à ce système, chaque producteur d’algorithme financier est comme un pollueur : à son échelle, il ne cause pas grand mal, mais l’accumulation est potentiellement désastreuse. Vu notre capacité à régler notre premier problème écologique, identifié depuis longtemps, on peut douter de notre aptitude à régler celui-ci, beaucoup plus récent.

Au Japon, le fait d’installer des capteurs et de recueillir des données anonymes sur la localisation et le cheminement des personnes ne suscite généralement pas de crainte, les Nippons ayant tendance à voir davantage le bénéfice qu’ils en retirent que des menaces à leur liberté individuelle.
