The move could benefit open-source AI companies in Europe that lobbied against the law, including France’s Mistral and Germany’s Aleph Alpha, as well as Meta, which released the open-source model LLaMA.”

Apple announces that RCS support is coming to iPhone next year

“Apple says it will work with the GSMA members on ways to further improve the RCS protocol. This particularly includes improving the security and encryption of RCS messages. Apple also told 9to5Mac that it will not use any sort of proprietary end-to-end encryption on top of RCS. Its focus is on improving the RCS standard itself. For comparison’s sake, Google’s implementation of end-to-end encryption is part of the Messages app on Android rather than the RCS spec itself. ”

“Il [le Conseil constitutionnel] juge que l’activation à distance d’appareils électroniques afin de capter des sons et des images sans même qu’il soit nécessaire pour les enquêteurs d’accéder physiquement à des lieux privés en vue de la mise en place de dispositifs de sonorisation et de captation est de nature à porter une atteinte particulièrement importante au droit au respect de la vie privée dans la mesure où elle permet l’enregistrement, dans tout lieu où l’appareil connecté détenue par une personne privée peut se trouver, y compris des lieux d’habitation, de paroles et d’images concernant aussi bien les personnes visées par les investigations que des tiers. Dès lors, en permettant de recourir à cette activation à distance non seulement pour les infractions les plus graves mais pour l’ensemble de celles relevant de la criminalité organisée, le législateur a permis qu’il soit porté au droit au respect de la vie privée une atteinte qui ne peut être regardée comme proportionnée au but poursuivi. Il censure en conséquence le 46 ° du paragraphe I de l’article 6 de la loi d’orientation et de programmation du ministère de la justice 2023-2027, ainsi que le 47 ° du même paragraphe I, qui en est inséparable.”

Meta Sued Over Features That Hook Children to Instagram, Facebook

“It’s unusual for so many states to come together to sue a tech giant for consumer harms. The coordination shows states are prioritizing the issue of children and online safety and combining legal resources to fight Meta, just as states had previously done for cases against Big Tobacco and Big Pharma companies. “Just like Big Tobacco and vaping companies have done in years past, Meta chose to maximize its profits at the expense of public health, specifically harming the health of the youngest among us,” Phil Weiser, Colorado’s attorney general, said in a statement.
Lawmakers around the globe have been trying to rein in platforms like Instagram and TikTok on behalf of children. Over the past few years, Britain, followed by states like California and Utah, passed laws to require social media platforms to boost privacy and safety protections for minors online. The Utah law, among other things, would require social media apps to turn off notifications by default for minors overnight to reduce interruptions to children’s sleep.”

Automobile: La Californie suspend les véhicules autonomes de Cruise

“L’entreprise de véhicules autonomes Cruise a subi un revers majeur mardi: les autorités californiennes ont suspendu son permis de faire rouler ses voitures sans chauffeur, après plusieurs accidents à San Francisco. L’agence chargée des véhicules à moteur en Californie (DMV) a notifié à la filiale de General Motors (GM) qu’elle «suspendait les permis de déploiement de véhicules autonomes et d’essais sans conducteur de Cruise, avec effet immédiat», d’après un communiqué. Le DMV évoque un «risque déraisonnable pour la sécurité publique», et précise qu’il n’y a «pas de délai fixe pour la suspension».”

Google throws California $93M to make tracking suit go away

“As has been the case in similar lawsuits filed against Google, California alleges that Google designed its location tracking system to deceive users into allowing the collection of location data that could be sold to advertisers for Google’s benefit. Even when such collection was disabled, the California suit alleged, data was still collected through other sources; Google was also misleading about users’ ability to opt out of location-based ad targeting, California claims.
« Our investigation revealed that Google was telling its users one thing – that it would no longer track their location once they opted out – but doing the opposite and continuing to track its users’ movements for its own commercial gain. That’s unacceptable, and we’re holding Google accountable with today’s settlement, » said California AG Rob Bonta. ”

“We have now informed the Government that when the law takes effect, we unfortunately will have to remove links to Canadian news from our Search, News and Discover products in Canada, and that C-18 will also make it untenable for us to continue offering our Google News Showcase product in Canada. We’re disappointed it has come to this. We don’t take this decision or its impacts lightly and believe it’s important to be transparent with Canadian publishers and our users as early as possible.”
