Messages, Dialer apps sent text, call info to Google

“According to a research paper, « What Data Do The Google Dialer and Messages Apps On Android Send to Google? » [PDF], by Trinity College Dublin computer science professor Douglas Leith, Google Messages (for text messaging) and Google Dialer (for phone calls) have been sending data about user communications to the Google Play Services Clearcut logger service and to Google’s Firebase Analytics service. « The data sent by Google Messages includes a hash of the message text, allowing linking of sender and receiver in a message exchange, » the paper says. « The data sent by Google Dialer includes the call time and duration, again allowing linking of the two handsets engaged in a phone call. Phone numbers are also sent to Google. »”

Android password-stealing malware infects 100,000 Google Play users

“A malicious Android app that steals Facebook credentials has been installed over 100,000 times via the Google Play Store, with the app still available to download. The Android malware is disguised as a cartoonifier app called ‘Craftsart Cartoon Photo Tools,’ allowing users to upload an image and convert it into a cartoon rendering. Over the past week, security researchers and mobile security firm Pradeo discovered that the Android app includes a trojan called ‘FaceStealer,’ which displays a Facebook login screen that requires users to log in before using the app. ”

“We’ve enhanced Android’s auto-rotate feature with face detection, using the front-facing camera to more accurately recognize when to rotate the screen. This is especially helpful for people who are using their devices while lying down on a couch or in bed, for example. For developers, this means that the auto-rotation behavior will provide a better user experience for users who have opted in through Settings. The enhanced auto-rotate feature lives within our recently announced Private Compute Core, so images are never stored or sent off the device. In Beta 3 this feature is available on Pixel 4 and later Pixel devices.To make screen rotation as speedy as possible on all devices, we’ve also optimized the animation and redrawing and added an ML-driven gesture-detection algorithm. As a result, the latency for the base auto-rotate feature has been reduced by 25%, and the benefits of the face detection enhancement build on top of those improvements. “We recently discovered a new strain of Android malware. The Trojan (detected as: Trojan-Spy.AndroidOS.Cookiethief) turned out to be quite simple. Its main task was to acquire root rights on the victim device, and transfer cookies used by the browser and Facebook app to the cybercriminals’ server. This abuse technique is possible not because of a vulnerability in Facebook app or browser itself. Malware could steal cookie files of any website from other apps in the same way and achieve similar results.”

“Netflix would’ve avoided this controversy if it had plainly told subscribers what it was doing somewhere in the app or with a notification. Instead, people discovered that Netflix was utilizing Android’s physical activity permission, which is strange behavior from a video streaming app. In some instances, it was doing this without asking users to approve the move first, as was the case for The Next Web’s Ivan Mehta. You’ve got to be transparent if you want to monitor anyone’s movements.”

“Called Screenwise Meter, the iOS and Android app gave users who opted into Google’s Opinion Rewards program gift cards in exchange for tracking their internet usage data. The iOS version of the app relied on Apple’s enterprise program, which allows for the distribution of apps with special privileges to be used only by a company’s employees. The app has now been disabled on iOS, though it’s still available on Google’s Play Store. ”

These results highlighted the fact that Android and Chrome platforms are critical vehicles for Google’s data collection.  Again, these experiments were done on stationary phones with no user interactions. If you actually use your phone the information collection increases with Google”.
“In fact, location information constituted 35 percent of all the data samples sent to Google”.
